Mysterious suicide drone hits Kuweiris Airbase
2 senior regime officers killed in latest attack on sensitive targets in Syria
Early this morning, a one-way suicide drone of unknown origin penetrated the Kuweiris Airbase and killed two Syrian regime officers – identified as Colonel Haitham Deeb from Latakia and Lieutenant Colonel Nizar al-Khayr from Tartus. Given the highly unusual nature of the attack, regime media has remained tight-lipped and unofficial regime sources have provided very little information. A small number have claimed the drone specifically struck an aircraft, but that remains unconfirmed.
Kuweiris Airbase is home to the Syrian military’s Air College and is ringed to the east and west by the Menagh and al-Jarrah airbases. In recent years, Kuweiris has received significant Syrian and Russian military investment. It’s currently home to a squadron of L-39 trainer and light attack jets – used to train a new generation of Syrian pilots, as well as to conduct kinetic missions in northern Syria and the central desert. The base itself is run jointly by the regime’s Air Force Intelligence directorate and the elite 25th Special Tasks Division, previously known as the Tiger Forces, founded and run by Major General Suheil al-Hassan.
